Sun Protection For Adults and Kids
Sun Protection is important for people t think about before summer
and the heat and UVA and UVB rays increase there intensity. I think the most
vulnerable are those that have fair to pale complexions; also I would include
babies and small children.
It’s important to protect yourself and those you care about from the sun. I
don’t mean short amounts of time exposed to the sun, because studies have shown
that 15-30 minutes of sun 3-5 times a week actually is good for the body.
Sunlight has a very healthy and beneficial side effect and that is that it helps
the body to manufacture vitamin D. Some of the benefits associated with vitamin
D are:
- Strong bones
- Prevention of osteoporosis
- Reduce the risk of cancers like breast, prostate, and colon. All of which are
more detrimental to a persons - - health that skin cancer.
- Mood improvement
- More active libido function
Sun Protection is all about taking precaution to
prevent damage to your skin from the sun. The main concern and danger is when
your exposed to long to UV rays and it causes sunburn. This can damage your skin
and leads to the risk of skin cancer.
Precautionary measures to take to keep from getting sunburn…
Monitor the time spent in the sun during peak hours 10:00am to 3:00 pm, which is
normally the hottest time of the day.
Use Sunscreen when you are going to be exposed to the sun for long periods of
time. Sunscreen is available in lotions, gels, creams, and sprays. Sun
protection factors “SPF” can be a little confusing as to what it exactly means.
“SPF” helps determine the amount someone can spend in the sun without getting
burnt. It assumes you know how long it will take for your skin to get burnt.
Suppose that you get a sunburn in 30 minutes when out in the sun with no sun
protection at all. Then an “SPF” of 8 would supposedly protect you for 240
minutes.
- 30 minutes skin burn time
- Sunscreen with protection factor of 8
- 8 times 30 = 240 minutes of protection
If you have a light complexion or burn easy, I would probably use a sunscreen
with an spf factor of 30 or more. I would also suggest getting a sunscreen or
sun block that protects against (UV-B) and (UV-A) rays, they are referred to as
broad spectrum.
